Trip to Cap Haitian scheduled June 20
A mission team including members from Unity, Rossford, and Elliston Zion United Methodist churches will visit Living Hope Mission June 20-27. Current plans call for the team to build pews for a church in rural mountain areas just outside Cap Haitian, but those plans may change, depending on the situation on the ground in Haiti.
Melissa Gregg, a member at Elliston Zion, is in charge of organizing the joint mission project. Here are basic details if you are interested in joining the team.
WHAT: One-week mission trip to Haiti
WHEN: June 20-27, 2015
COST: The trip will cost about $1,500 per person. Those who are serious about participating must pay a $500 deposit by Jan. 31 so that airline tickets can be purchased. TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS: The team will travel from Detroit Metro Airport to Fort Lauderdale, FL. There, they will switch to a Caribbean charter line that will travel direct to Cap Haitian. Those who are serious must arrange to have passports no later than Jan. 31. The passport information is required to obtain tickets to Haiti. Routine passport processing is 4-6 weeks, so those who do not have an active passport must apply no later than Dec. 15.
VACCINES & MEDICATIONS: The U.S. Center for Disease Control recommends the following vaccines and medications for those traveling to Haiti -- routine (MMR, DTP, chickenpox, polio), Hepatitis A, Typhoid, malaria (pills taken before, during & after the trip). Diarrhea meds recommended. The easiest way to obtain proper meds is to go through the Lucas County Health Department, which operates a nursing service for those traveling internationally.

Weather in Cap Haitian is quite hot and humid in June. Much of the team's local travel there will occur in the bed of an open truck, although other arrangements can be made for those with mobility issues.
